Christ Jesus Give Us Perfect Peace

By Fay Kelly

Colossians 3:15 “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

Peace has several meanings according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. “(1) Freedom from disturbance; tranquility. (2) A state of period in which there is no war or war has just ended. (3) Freedom from upsetting thoughts or harmony in personal relationships, an inner calm. (4) A biblical peace, rooted in the Hebrew word shalom, means more than just the absence of conflict; it signifies wholeness, completeness and restoration. It includes  a right relationship with God, a right relationship with others, and internal harmony and rest. Peace is both a gift from God, experienced through trusting him, and a task for humans to achieve through their actions.”

I am sure the biblical definition of peace is the most important to us as Christians.

Sometimes in life our peace can be taken from us in one way or another. Sometimes it is something out of our control, other times we do it ourselves by making bad choices.

Several years ago I found myself in a situation that had totally stolen my peace, and it was my own poor choices! After being widowed for a little over six years, I married a man who was not a Christian. I had convinced myself that he wanted to become a Christian and live a better life. I thought I was doing the right thing. Yes, I prayed about it, just not long enough to hear from God. In a few months my life was anything but peaceful. I lived in this situation for four years. I knew I couldn’t go on any longer living outside of God’s will. I started rebuilding my relationship with God. With God's grace, mercy, and forgiveness, I found my way back to the peace that only comes for a relationship with Jesus.

I am so very thankful that God doesn't turn his back on us when we make poor choices. I have learned he is always there with open arms. If we only ask for his forgiveness, his grace and mercy are never ending.

Have you ever been in a place where you can’t feel the inner peace that only comes for Jesus? It can be a very lonely place where nothing feels right because it isn't right and only coming back to Jesus can make it right.

Heavenly Father, help us search our hearts and ask you if there is anything in our lives that keeps us from knowing your peace in our lives. Amen.
